What better way to share the joy of pet ownership than by taking part in National Pet Month, this year marking its 25th anniversary. Running from 1 April – 5 May, the charity has chosen the apt theme of ‘Celebrating Our Pets’ for 2014.

National Pet Month promotes responsible pet ownership and aims to raise money for pet charities across the UK.

Animal charities take note: with the closing date of 13 December fast approaching, now’s the time to apply for a grant from the Petplan Charitable Trust.

Since the Trust launched in 1994, it has provided more than £7 million in grants to support a wide range of projects – all thanks to the thousands of generous Petplan policyholders who donate to the Trust every year.

We all love our pooches, but what happens to them when their owners are no longer able to look after them? Michele Simmons meets the Oldies Club, a registered charity with 40 dogs in its care.

It all started back in 2005 with a 13-year-old Collie called Ted. He was blind in one eye and was found wandering the streets of Warrington, looking very thin and terrified of the cars.

Millions of animal lovers have been tuning in to ITV1’s Paul O’Grady: For the Love of Dogs to follow the fortunes of the canine residents at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.

Having experienced the heartbreak of losing his faithful sidekick Buster in 2009, entertainer Paul O’Grady is no stranger to the sad side of animal life. But, as he says of the programme, ‘People think it’s all doom and gloom but it’s not. Battersea is a magical place.’

Petplan’s £1 million gift for rescue animals

We are thrilled to announce that we have now raised £1 million for our friends at animal charity Blue Cross.

These valuable funds, generated over the past 10 years, have contributed to the running costs of a dozen rehoming centres for dogs, cats, horses and rabbits, as well as four major animal hospitals across the UK.

Meet the amazing Hounds for Heroes

Hounds for Heroes is a fantastic new charity that places highly capable assistance dogs with injured personnel from the armed forces and civilian emergency services. We meet founder Allen Parton to hear his story. From the PetPeople magazine archive.

The life of Allen Parton, a former chief petty officer in the Royal Navy, changed in an instant when he was serving in the 1991 Gulf War. He suffered head injuries so severe that he remembered nothing of his wife and children and little of his past life; he was left partially paralysed and dependent on a wheelchair. Traumatised, amnesiac and unable to perform the most mundane tasks, Allen twice attempted suicide before a chance encounter with Endal, a remarkable Labrador Retriever, who helped him to adjust and cope with life.
