The Parmee family were devastated when their beloved cat Chewie was diagnosed with lymphoma. But thanks to his vet and lots of love, he’s now well again.

Mum-of-three Elizabeth Parmee welcomed Chewie into her family six years ago, and he has been a cherished member ever since.

Earlier this year, we devoted a blog post to the things you wish you’d known before you got your pet. We had a fantastic response, so we decided to ask 10 of our favourite mummy and pet travel bloggers, too. Their responses express the joys and challenges of juggling a family and pet.

‘I wish I’d known about the early morning rubbish clearances. Even though we feed our pet a healthy diet, she still cannot refuse the allure of bins.

Petplan’s £1 million gift for rescue animals

We are thrilled to announce that we have now raised £1 million for our friends at animal charity Blue Cross.

These valuable funds, generated over the past 10 years, have contributed to the running costs of a dozen rehoming centres for dogs, cats, horses and rabbits, as well as four major animal hospitals across the UK.

Video: an amazing real-life recovery story

Sue Millard will never forget the distraught call from her daughter Rebecca, on 6 August last year, after her beautiful Collie-Spaniel cross Ben suffered a 35-foot fall. Here is the story of his amazing recovery back to health. From the current edition of PetPeople magazine.

‘My daughter had been out walking on a forestry road when Ben went through a hole in a fence and over a sheer drop. His injuries were so bad that he’d been rushed to the hospital.’

Looking back, Sue admits that the next few days were a blur for the whole family: ‘Ben was in such a state – it was touch and go whether they could save him. None of us got much sleep. We cried so much – we thought we’d lose him.

Customer story: dealing with diabetes

Weeks after getting her characterful cat Horace, Janet Parnell discovered he had diabetes. Luckily, a Petplan Covered for Life policy means Horace gets all the treatment he deserves. From the current issue of PetPeople magazine.

The moment she spotted Horace on The Blue Cross website, Janet Parnell knew he was the cat for her. ‘It was love at first sight,’ she says.

However, within a few weeks of starting his new life, Janet and husband David became concerned that Horace was drinking excessively, sleeping a lot and not grooming.

We’ve received this extraordinary account of a cat’s sense of smell from Petplan customer Margaret Wendy Harris of Northwich, Cheshire, and we just had to share it with you. Hope you like it!

Dear Petplan,

I have just discovered that a cat’s incredible sense of smell could play an important role in helping people to identify their kith and kin. Many years after being adopted as a baby, I made contact with my natural brother for the first time. Incredibly, my six-year-old shorthaired cat, Megan, has confirmed that we are from the same flesh and blood. Normally, she runs upstairs when strangers – particularly men – call to our home.

Petplan has helped out my 11-year-old rescue dog Jay on numerous occasions during his life. His problems started when he was only one; his mouth was itchy all the time and, although he never broke the skin, he would scratch it all the time.
